Ephesians 1:18
...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints...
This series is inspired by the controversial Rorschach test, where psychologist Hermann Rorschach used various inkblots to analyse people’s personalities and psychology. He claimed our process of perceiving an art piece does not just register sensory input (what our eyes see) but transforms them through imagination.
The Bible verse for this series describes our understanding as having eyes... What a thought! The Greek word for understanding is “dianoia” which means the mind/faculty of imagination and the Greek word for “enlightened” is the word “photizo” which is to give light or to see. This furthers the idea that God created our faculties of understanding with the ability to see and perceive– not only the material things around us but to imagine the impossible. These art pieces also come alive under a different lighting as well!
Alas, growing up has denigrated our imagination and convinced us that logic is a better teacher. In that, the writer of Ephesians prayed that we would rediscover our innate desire to imagine, the God-given faculty that lays dormant.
Consider this Rorshach art series my invitation for you to be a rebel once more. To dream, see and be a child again.
Come, let us imagine. Let God, whose name is the I Am, enlighten the eyes of your heart.
